On any given day it is estimated that about 5% of the population suffers from piles or what is more commonly known as Hemorrhoids. In the vast majority of cases hemorrhoids are not considered serious or life threatening but, for many who suffer from them they can be uncomfortable and painful. Luckily treatment for this condition is usually pretty straight forward and inexpensive and most treatments can be accomplished naturally and at home.
An Ounce of Prevention….
Most people have heard the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and that is certainly true when speaking of Hemorrhoid treatment. The best treatment is to prevent the condition from arising in the first place. In order to do that, it helps to understand what Hemorrhoids are and what causes them.
Quite simply piles or Hemorrhoids are veins in the anus canal that become inflamed and swell. The swelling can be due to excess pressure put on the body through obesity or pregnancy or by straining when you have a bowel movement. To help prevent hemorrhoids from occurring living a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet consisting of plenty of fiber and fluids and daily exercise will help to keep you regular and therefore less likely to become constipated and prevent straining during bowel movements. Limiting sodium intake and not holding your stools also helps to prevent hemorrhoids from developing.
Natural Hemorrhoid Treatment
While proper diet and exercise and practicing healthy lifestyle habits can help prevent piles from occurring there are still times despite your best efforts when this condition may arise. In such situations natural hemorrhoid treatment is often all that is needed to relieve the painful symptoms this condition causes. Increase your fiber and liquid intake, avoiding salt and getting plenty of exercise will help relieve both constipation and stress on the swollen veins giving them time to heal. Using ice packs can numb pain and help reduce swelling. Taking hot baths 3 or 4 times a day can help increase blood circulation which may aid in healing as well as relieve some of the pain and itching that are symptoms of hemorrhoids.
In addition instead of wiping with toilet paper washing the area with moist towelettes containing aloe and witch hazel will reduce the chances of irritating the affected area and will also provide a cooling effect that will help reduce the itching and pain. At bedtime, sleeping on your stomach will help to relieve the strain on the area and help promote circulation.
When Natural Hemorrhoid Treatment is Not enough
If the pain and itching from hemorrhoids are such that you can not find relief from natural remedies then there are over the counter medications that can temporary relieve some of the symptoms. In more severe cases your doctor may decide upon a choice of medical procedures that either cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid or results in causing it to shrink.
Only in the most chronic and severe cases will surgery be used and usually only after all other hemorrhoid treatment options have failed.
